Art lesson with artist Neil Shasky
After morning tea we headed over to the hall for our art lesson with artist Neil Shasky. The focus was on self-portraits and the proportions of the face.
This kicks off our 2 day 'Art Attack' - creating a self-portrait.
Here are some photos of us today.

Buddy Reading
Today we looked at our Cyclone Pam reading, specifically the vocabulary.
Words that we discussed were: strewn, debris, isolated, prone, archipelago
After that we read with a buddy.
Everyone took home a copy of the reading which they will read tonight. It doesn't need to come back as students already have a copy glued into their reading activities book.
Here are some of us in action.

Principal's Award
Congratulations to Jessica who received a Principal's Award at school assembly today. Jessica received this award because she is an outstanding self-manager who is aware of who she works best with and where in the classroom she works to ensure she is on task. Jessica is also very helpful with others who need some support.
Well done, Jessica.

Student Council election
On Friday we held our election for the Student Council. 10 boys and 7 girls went into the first round ballot.
Prior to this a number of students took the opportunity to present their credentials in a 2 minute speech. There were wonderful anecdotes of students wanting to begin their leadership journey, others deciding to throw their hat in the ring after sitting on the sidelines for a couple of years, and even one who promised a free sausage sizzle if students voted for them.
6 students ( 3 boys and 3 girls) made it through to the final ballot.
Unfortunately we were unable to have 6 councillors and it is always hard to miss out.
The final results were:
Student Council : Girl - Amelia Tainui Boy - Cormac Tobin
Deputy Girl - Zoe Dryden Deputy Boy - Oscar Andersen
Congratulations to all those who put their names forward. You can be very proud of yourself.
Given the desire of many students to be involved in a leadership position we are looking at establishing a Room 9 class council run by students. Watch this space.

Football training
Today Emma and Xavier (from France) from Mainland football came to Oaklands and room 9 went out for a session. We split off into girls and boys with the boys playing a game of 'connect four' and a mini-game after practising dribbling and control skills. The girls played a game of zombie tag using footballs as well as a mini-game.
Whilst it was hot and tiring, everyone seemed to have a good time. Here are some photos of us in action.
By the way, Mr F was the champion with 11 kicks on the foot in a row.

Completing a line graph
Today we took our survey data of our favourite fruit burst flavours and displayed it as a line graph.
We looked at an instructional video ( on the statistics page) then had a go.
It took a bit of re-ruling and some rubbing out but we got there.
And here we are.
